Initially, I was sceptical about reviewing the Tecno Camon Premier because I have been disappointed lately with the new midrange smartphone entrants. With a little convincing and a cup of yoghurt, I finally got down to writing and unlocked a lot of hidden gems in the latest Tecno Camon series.
I know the Kardashians will pick a fight with me but I am not one who is big on cameras – an area Tecno has always excelled at. In a crowded midrange market, somehow Tecno rises above the pile to make you shout: “Another Tecno? Heck Yes!”
I am not a fan of influencer led communications but in the spirit of full disclosure I am a Wizkid Stan, who also happens to the brand’s spokesman so let’ s say – match made in heaven?
The big brother of the Camon 15 series (Camon Air, Pro and Premier) the Tecno Camon Premier is accordingly priced at Kshs 26,999 – by Tecno standards that is quite expensive.
Available in Ice Jadeite and Opal White, I like the former because it is not too much into your face but yet conveys sophistication simply. Also, I am a Star Wars guys. I am Jedi-te…no? No? Tough crowd.
In a market where the selfie is king and Instagram reigns supreme, the Tecno Camon 15 Premier packs four camera modules at the back, with the main sensor being a large 64-megapixel shooter (what was my Instagram password again?), accompanied by 5-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 0.3-megapixel dedicated night lens and another 2-megapixel dedicated macro lens. The motorized pop-selfie upfront has a 32-megapixel sensor.
With its Ultra HD and Super Night Mode, rest assured your images can be scaled and zoomed in without sacrificing clarity (yeei).
Meanwhile with the Super Night Mode, experience the allure of TAIVOS™ technology to tame the wilderness that night shots have traditionally been accustomed to, reducing noise and optimizing exposure levels with 15-frame synth, and unbridled levels of clarity. Now there is no reason not to be out at night – well, except during the lockdown.
PS: (TAIVOS™ filters image noise and enables up to 15-frame synth with an imaging time of just 4.68 seconds while most other smartphones only achieve this in 5.5 seconds or even 7 seconds. That means that the photographs shot with TAIVOS™ are built from a composite of 15 image frames that can be analyzed and recombined pixel-for-pixel, vividly capturing each element in your scenes with optimal contrast.
If all you heard was blah blah blah technical jargon – the point is, your pictures will always be on point.)
Which reminds me – let’s talk about the 32MP Pop-up selfie camera. It’s different but with time you get used to it.
It is more of an acquired taste and will definitely turn a few heads your way. Upon opening the selfie camera, the front camera will “POP-UP” from the body, and the 32MP Clear Lens will be ready to capture your most perfect you moments. Over to you to dive in a pool of self-indulgence and bask in the hubris of eyeballs gloating over your device.
With a massive 6.6 inch screen – one would wonder do you really need a TV (hehe)? Packing 91.2% super screen ratio, get a front-row seat to the evasive promised land of an immersive, full view, cinematic experience. Trust me, the inches matter. Because size.
Not satisfied with turning your onlookers green, the Tecno Camon 15 Premier is armed with 128GB ROM + 6GB RAM (slight gasp) powered by a 4000mAh long-lasting battery. In layman’s terms: you can comfortably spend a reasonable amount on all your favourite apps and still have enough juice left in your device to get back home – even if you are a Twitter influencer.
The battery is fully charged in less than one and half hours, so you can easily make breakfast, get your morning run, take a shower and by the time you are done, you have 100% battery life. Well, at least if you take one and a half hours.

– Still a micro-USB cable. I’m one of those people who will always advocate for Type C Cables. Of course, I may just be clumsy. But still.
